This happened at PetSmart in Ashland, KY. It was my first time at PetSmart.

I told them of my concerns before they started which included the story of a groomer leaving a dog in the dryer and it died (they said that happened at Petco not PetSmart) and I also heard of them hooking large dogs up to a noose around their neck and when left along the the dogs stepped off the side of the grooming table and hung themselves. They explained it was mandatory for two people to be present when grooming large dogs so it was impossible for a dog to hang himself during grooming. I signed paperwork and they went to work on my dog; however, I stood outside the glass window and observed the entire procedure. Guess what, one of the girls stepped away from the grooming table and my dog stepped off the table and hung himself.

They were watching me closer than my dog and they panicked when they saw the look on my face and when they looked back at the dog, he was hanging there by that *** noose. If I hadn't been there watching, if I had left my dog alone with them, he probably would have died. They were aware I was prepared to watch the entire process so they had their eyes on me more than on the dog so if I hadn't been there, it's hard telling when they would have noticed what happened. Afterwards, they acted like nothing happened and if I hadn't been there, I wouldn't have known the difference.

I immediately told them they need to have side rails equivalent to a hospital bed so the dogs can't fall off and hang themselves. They still acted like nothing happened and refused to discuss it.

Reason of review: Poor customer service.

Preferred solution: Let the company propose a solution.

PetSmart Cons: Irresponsibility.

Location: Huntington, West Virginia

I'm sorry but a parent standing there watching you groom really puts the pressure on. Perhaps if you weren't standing there staring, they would have had full attention on the dog instead.

I have had dogs fall off the table with multiple associates standing around, and no eyes taken off the dog. I've had it happen to dogs that I've been drying, I've had it happen to dogs whose nails I've been clipping, and I was paying full 110% attention to the dog. It just happens. It is NOT what we want to happen.

In fact, it's TERRIFYING that the dogs can step off the table. I wouldn't discuss it with you either. What would you say to someone who just saw their dog step off the table and hang? It makes me want to cry.

All I would be able to say is "I'm so sorry that happened" before bursting into tears and leaving for the day. My day would be RUINED if a parent saw that happen to their baby, even more so if they angrily confronted me about it. I would probably put in my notice that day.

Groomer is a HIGH stress job because of the unpredictability. It's way harder than you think.

It wouldn't happen if there was a way to PREVENT a dog from falling off of table!!!!!

Why don't you take it upon yourself to invent, patent, trademark, manufacture, package, sell and ship this desperately needed product.

No one is disputing that grooming is hard but responding by saying "dogs try to hang themselves constantly" isn't making it better. How about they be restrained on the ground instead of on a table?
